Sectors - Disaster management

Individuals and Organizations responsible for emergency management use many tools to save lives, reduce human suffering and preserve economic assets before, during and after a catastrophic event. Correct and timely information is a critical part of any successful emergency management programme. GC can assist in developing a GIS to provide that set of information.

GIS can be part of the solution to many emergency management problems. GC can be a value added solutions provider in the following:

  • Identify emergency management problems with spatial aspects appropriate for GIS.
  • Outline an effective GIS process for collecting and analyzing spatial data for emergency management for problem solving.
  • Evaluate the costs of institutionalizing GIS as an emergency management tool in terms of staffing, training, data collection, hardware and software.

Yesterday’s solutions may not solve today’s problems and will definitely not solve tomorrow’s. Global Coordinates can provide state of the art solutions for today and tomorrow.

With the tropical climate and unstable landforms, coupled with high population density, poverty, illiteracy and lack of adequate infrastructure, Developing countries are very vulnerable to suffer very often from various natural disasters, namely drought, flood, cyclone, earth quake, landslide, forest fire, hail storm, locust, volcanic eruption, etc. Which strike causing a devastating impact on human life, economy and environment. Though it is almost impossible to fully recoup the damage caused by the disasters, it is possible to (i) minimize the potential risks by developing early warning strategies (ii) prepare and implement developmental plans to provide resilience to such disasters (iii) mobilize resources including communication and telemedicinal services, and (iv) to help in rehabilitation and post-disaster reconstruction. Space technology plays a crucial role in efficient mitigation of disasters.

While communication satellites help in disaster warning, relief mobilization and tele-medicinal support, earth observation satellites provide required database for pre-disaster preparedness programmes, disaster response, monitoring activities and post-disaster damage assessment, and reconstruction, and rehabilitation.
